Youth team beat Celta and progress in Copa del Rey

Whirlwind second half from Rojillo youngsters

Sunday was a historic day at the Ciudad de Fútbol. CD Numancia Juvenil, the youth team, beat Celta de Vigo 4-1 to progress to the next round of the Copa del Rey. This overturned the adverse result from the first leg at A Madroa, where the Galicians had won 1-0. It was a gutsy performance, and Pablo Ayuso’s youngsters shone especially in an inspiring second half.

Numancia started well and Celta had no choice but to defend in their own half and hope to do something on the break. The Rojillos bossed the game in the first 20 minutes, but Celta showed that it is not necessary to dominate in order to score. In the 25th minute, the Galicians intercepted, counter-attacked, reached the goal line and centred, Martín was on the end of it and headed home masterfully. First blood for the visitors, and a two-goal advantage overall.

This meant Ayuso’s lads needed three goals to win the tie. The visitors’ goal put the Numantinos off their stride for a while and they struggled against the pacey Celta side, who showed a lot of quality but were unable to get past Toni, who was immense in goal for Numancia.

Shortly before half time, though, Numancia hauled themselves back into the game and the tie. Vicario headed in from a corner to level the scores and give the Rojillos some hope. There were no more goals before the break.

After the restart, Numancia were like a whirlwind, and they did not give Celta the chance to catch their breath. Less than ten minutes into the half, Albín had the fans out of their seats and on their feet with a spectacular overhead kick that made it 2-1 for the hosts.

If Celta’s goal had been a blow for the Rojillos in the first half, Albín’s took the wind out of the visitors’ sails now. In the 61st minute, the Celta ‘keeper, Raúl, saved his team by turning away Dani Fernández’s rasping shot. The resulting corner led to the 3-1, though. Vidorreta fought for the ball close to the goal line, played it back for Vicario who struck the ball through the melee and into the net. It was 3-1 and the fans went wild.

There was still half an hour to go, but Numancia held firm. The Celta manager used up his remaining substitutions, hoping to get a reaction from his team, but it was Numancia who were able to finish it off.

From yet another corner, Numancia sealed the result. David Sanz sent an inswinging cross to the near post and the captain, Raúl, headed in perfectly. This a serious blow for Celta, who are a great side, as they now needed to score twice.

The final minutes were intense. Celta pressed hard but were unable to get past the resolute Sorianos, who are ambitious and have already made this a historic season for the Numancia academy. Bring on the next rivals!
