C.D. Numancia to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Los Pajaritos stadium by inviting the 1998-99 squad that inaugurated the ground and then took the team to the top flight

January 14th is the 20th birthday of the Los Pajaritos stadium and C.D. Numancia want to celebrate the event by packing the ground to the rafters for the Rojillos’ next home game, which will be next Saturday, January 19th, against Córdoba C.F., at 18.00.

To commemorate that first fixture, in the winter of 1999, against Real Zaragoza, Numancia have invited all the members of the 1998-99 squad to the game against Córdoba. Those players were not only the ones who inaugurated Los Pajaritos, but also took part in the unforgettable drive that took Numancia to their first ever promotion to the top flight at the end of that season.

With the aim of having as many fans as possible present to enjoy this special birthday celebration, the club are giving a free ticket to all season-ticket holders, until there are none left available. For that reason, there is a specially-designed ticket, which will bear the logo of the 20th birthday of the ground, and will later will become a collector’s item.

As of Monday January 14th, all season-ticket holders who wish to pick up the ticket they are entitled to, will be able to do so at the club offices. For reasons of protocol and organisation, VIP zone tickets are not included in this promotion.

Many fans still recall that January day, in 1999, when the team made their first appearance at the brand-new stadium, with the star guests, Real Zaragoza, at that time in the First Division, joining in the party.

The game went to the visitors that day, with the Aragonese side running out 1-3 winners, and Pier went down as the first player to score at the Nuevos Pajaritos ground, finding the net in the 37th minute. For the Rojillos, Javier Castaño also went into the history books, as the Asturian equalised with a powerful shot in the 50th minute.

Although the game was ‘only’ a friendly, more than 6,000 fans turned up for the occasion. After that game, one for the fans’ scrapbook, Numancia had their first official fixture at Los Pajaritos just four days later. It was on matchday 20 of the Second Division campaign, and saw the Rojillos take on Orense. Miguel Ángel Lotina’s side saw off the Galicians by a convincing 4-0 scoreline, with Caco Morán and Castaño netting two apiece.

More than 5,000 fans were there that day, and they saw how Numancia finished the first half of the season as leaders, despite the slip-up the following week against Recreativo, at the Colombino.
