Numancia crash to 3-0 defeat in Las Palmas

Poor start to game condemns Sorianos at the Estadio de Gran Canaria

C.D. Numancia took a pasting at the Estadio Gran Canaria, going down 3-0 to U.D. Las Palmas, in a game in which the Rojillos got off on the wrong foot, conceding in the first minute, and did little right thereafter.

The game could not have begun worse than it did for Numancia. In the very first move of the game, Yeboah committed a foul near the halfway line, and was shown a yellow card for his troubles. From the resulting free-kick, a looping ball into the box, the Canary Islanders opened the scoring. Araujo was the first to get on the end of it and sent the ball into the net, possibly using his arm, while the visiting defenders stood by passively.

López Garai’s side thus faced an uphill struggle from the word go. It was never going to be easy in a stadium like the Gran Canaria, even though the islanders are hardly in their best form at the moment either. For this game, Manolo Jiménez sent out a strong front three, Rubén Castro, Araujo and Rafa Mir, but also set up strongly at the back, with a trio made up of Timor, Ruíz de Galarreta and one of the Castellano brothers, Javi.

Numancia had more of the ball and were clearly looking to dominate and attack, but were let down by their defending at another set-piece. The Canary Islanders had another free-kick, not far from the first-minute one, and this time it was Rafa Mir who got in first, ahead of the Rojillo defence, to head home and double his team’s lead.

Two strikes inside the first 20 minutes were enough to give Las Palmas a clear advantage against a Numancia side who at least tried to play decent football.

After the break, the visitors stepped up a gear and attempted to get back into the game. López Garai’s side did look like they might be able to do something positive if they managed to get a first goal back.

Nacho was a constant thorn in Las Palmas’ side and he created most of the danger for Numancia, but it was not to be the Sorianos’ afternoon as in the 73rd minute they were a man down after Escassi was shown a second yellow card.

With the Málaga-born midfielder now taking an early shower, Numancia’s chances of clawing their way back into the game ran out there, and within a couple of minutes of his expulsion, Maikel Mesa made it 3-0, pouncing on a rebound in Juan Carlos’ area.
