Last-minute equaliser denies Numancia victory in Mallorca clash

Salva Sevilla levels for the Balearic Islanders in the 90th minute

Once again, Numancia let two points slip away in the last minute. The Rojillos drew one-all with Mallorca in a game in which they took an early lead through Marc Mateu’s direct free-kick that found its way into the net with a little help from the defender, Sastre. It was still only the seventh minute, and things were looking good for the Sorianos.

Emboldened by the lead, Numancia began to control the game and defended well against a Mallorca side who were well organised and knew what they wanted. They knew that long balls in behind the hosts’ defenders could do a lot of damage, and that was what they attempted throughout the first half. Apart from that, Aridai on the right wing represented the biggest threat from the Balearic Islanders, but Carlos Gutiérrez, wearing a face mask to protect his fractured nose, was as solid as a rock in the centre of the Numancia defence, and got in the way of every centre the winger put in.

Mallorca were playing for fourth place in the table, and showed themselves to be a strong, solid side right from the outset. Facing them were a Numancia who did not shy away from the fight and looked to find their own way around the visitors’ high pressing. There were spells when the home side moved the ball around nicely and produced some good positional play, with Mallorca unable to take the ball from López Garai’s boys.

In the second half, Mallorca stepped up a gear and had Numancia on the back foot. Despite this, however, the Sorianos defended in an orderly fashion but did have problems to recuperate possession. David Rodríguez was unable to give the team the fresh air they needed up front, and Numancia chose to defend the lead.

Yeboah came on for the hobbling Higinio on the right wing, in an attempt to get some extra pace on that side, and Kako replaced David Rodríguez. Numancia continued to defend well and Mallorca, though on top, were only able create a feeling of danger from set pieces.

But, the 90th minute came, and the Sorianos once again took a heavy blow to their confidence. Lago Junior got past Marc Mateu on the right, reached the goal line and centred into the goal area. Nobody was there to put it in and the loose ball ended up at Nacho’s feet. The defender somehow failed to boot it clear and Salva Sevilla took advantage of his confusion to poke home the equaliser.

Just a little stoppage time remained, and the Los Pajaritos faithful, who had scented victory, once again tasted bitter disappointment as Numancia let another two points slip from their grasp.
