LaLiga celebrates 90 years of professional football history

Víctor Martín represents C.D. Numancia in the event held at RCD Espanyol de Barcelona's stadium on Wednesday

It was 90 years ago that a ball was first kicked in earnest in league competition in Spain, and 90 years have also passed since Pitus Prat scored the first goal in the competition’s history, for the Barcelona-based RCD Espanyol against Real Unión, from Irún. Since that time, LaLiga and its fans have enjoyed watching some of the best players in the world, in countless exciting games, week in week out, in a competition which has become a reference point for football worldwide.

The RCDE Stadium, home of Espanyol, was all decked out for the event which rendered tribute to all the great stars who have made LaLiga history. A moving occasion, with the memory of those who have left their mark on the path of LaLiga, such as Antoni Ramallets, Luis Aragonés or Miguel Muñoz, paying homage to historical stadiums such as El Molinón, long-serving players such as César Sánchez and Miquel Soler, or the top scorers of the competition, such as Leo Messi, this get-together took a look back at professional football’s 90 years of history.

Representatives from all the clubs in the league, sporting institutions, and Spanish footballing legends were all present at this grand event and accompanied LaLiga and its prize winners in a moving tribute, also attended by the C.D. Numancia Director General, Víctor Martín, who has the role of Second Vice-president of LaLiga as well.

María José Rienda, President of the Consejo Superior de Deportes (Higher Sports Council), attended the event and remarked that “it is a source of great pride to have an organisation such as LaLiga, with all its history behind it, that makes it essential for sport in general. Today, we congratulate LaLiga on its 90th birthday, for us it is vital to have an organisation with such experience within the ambit of Spanish sport, because that means that things have been done the right way and have lasted over time”.

Javier Tebas, LaLiga President, gave thanks for “the work and effort that the clubs have put in to make it so that, since that first game was played at the Sarrià ground in 1929, this has become the best league in the world”. As well as this, he recalled: “this is a great tribute to the stars who have taken a lead role in all the stories that have taken place over these 90 years”.

In a ceremony that was heavy on emotion, presented by those who have been the voices of football on television over the last two decades, Carlos Martínez and Michael Robinson, a great many stories were told and most of those present were moved to tears by the memories evoked.
