Football shows Numancia its cruel side again

Oviedo take all three points from Los Pajaritos at the last gasp

Numancia were reminded once again, in this clash with Real Oviedo, of just how cruel football can be at times. It was a game in which the Sorianos did much that might have merited a win but in which they also made dreadful mistakes at key moments, which condemned them to defeat. The Rojillos attacked in a way that wins games, but defended in a way that loses them, and that was what happened in the last minute, after a poorly-defended corner gave Bolaño the chance to make a it 2-3 and seal the game for the visitors.

Part of the problem was that, once again, López Garai’s side faced an uphill struggle almost from the outset. Barely three minutes had gone by when Javi Hernández powered his way past several defenders and sent in a well-struck shot to open the scoring for Anquela’s boys.

Once again, swimming against the tide. Once again, punished almost immediately on coming out of the dressing room. Despite the blow, Numancia attempted to fight back and, firstly, Diamanka, following a good move by Villalba and Oyarzun, and then Guillermo, denied by a great save by the visiting ‘keeper Champagne, came close to levelling the scores before the break.

After the re-start, Numancia’s dominance became more apparent. Within four minutes Yeboah embarked on a good individual move and then found the net with a classy strike at the near post, thus putting the scores level.

Numancia had deserved this, and now looked to be on the road to staging a comeback. Just three minutes later, however, Oviedo regained the lead when Carlos Hernández thumped in a header from a corner. All the Rojillos’ efforts had been in vain, and now it was a question of reacting once again to the adverse situation.

The hosts did just that, and in the 54th minute Diamanka finished a fine individual move with a screamer of a shot to put the scores level once again, and with 35 minutes still on the clock.

From the Senegalese player’s goal onwards, it was the Sorianos who showed most initiative. Whether it was Yeboah down the right-hand side or Oyarzun down the left, Numancia deserved a third goal after several crosses, direct free-kicks, above all two by Guillermo, who was everywhere in attack, and a few corners they were unable to capitalise on.

Just when the Numantinos’ inability to take their chances seemed destined to lead the game to a draw came a bucket of freezing water that left the Los Pajaritos faithful even colder than they had been. At the same time as the fourth official was indicating the stoppage time to be added, Bolaño took advantage of a poorly-defended corner to head into the net, put the score at 2-3 and leave the Rojillos desperately disappointed after another kick in the teeth that showed them once again how heartless football can be.
