Back to winning ways at Los Pajaritos (2-0)

Numancia overcome Tenerife with two second-half goals from Diamanka and Guillermo

Numancia earned a convincing win over Tenerife, putting in a good performance throughout a game that was decided in the second half thanks to goals from Diamanka and Guillermo. It was a win that Aritz López Garai’s side fully deserved and fans saw a determined, dominant Numancia side, one that played vertically and created many chances. Straight after the kick-off, Guillermo came close to opening the scoring after a good move by Yeboah down the right, but he failed to keep his shot on target and it veered wide.

The Rojillos created a lot during the first 45 but did not get the prize of a goal for all their efforts. All of the attacks ended up with the ball either in the hands of Dani Hernández -Tenerife’s best player on the day- or going into the stands.

The frustration was ended early in the second half, after four minutes to be exact. With the umpteenth cross that came swinging in from the left -Marc Mateu and Alain Oyarzun had sent in many, and good ones- Pape Diamanka got to the ball before the ‘keeper and headed into the net. While the hosts celebrated the goal, the Canary Islanders protested that Diamanka had fouled the goalkeeper, but the referee allowed it to stand.

By now, the home side had most of the ball, and were bossing the game. Tenerife struggled to deal with the Rojillos’ high-pressing game and, although they changed system a couple of times over the duration of the match, they were unable to find a way to hurt the Sorianos.

Guillermo then had a chance to score Numancia’s second, pouncing on to the rebound when Dani Hernández blocked but could not hold a fierce shot from Alain Oyarzun from the edge of the box, but his left-footed shot was once again repelled by the visiting ‘keeper. Hernández became the lead player on the stage at this point in the game, as he saved his side on numerous occasions with several meritorious interventions. First, he denied Escassi, tipping his header on to the bar, then he got a hand to Pablo Larrea’s shot that looked to be going in close to the post.

Numancia insisted and insisted, and finally it was Guillermo who broke the visitors’ resistance. Alain intercepted a ball as Tenerife attempted to mount an attack, burst forward and split the defence in two with a finely weighted pass to Guillermo which the Basque forward took full advantage of, chipping over Hernández as he came off his line. A great goal that came from recuperating the ball, setting up a neat move and good finishing. This was the icing on the cake for a Numancia side who had put in one of their best performances of the season so far, especially in terms of overall play and the creation of chances.
