Another point slips away as last-minute curse strikes again

Machís’ 95th-minute goal in Cádiz means another defeat for Numancia on the road

Numancia return empty-handed from their Easter trip to Cádiz. A strike by Darwin Machís in the 95th minute put paid to any hope the Sorianos had of bringing home a point from the Ramón de Carranza.

López Garai’s side put in a poor first half, letting their hosts have the ball and the initiative. While the yellows failed to create much danger around the Numantine goal, set pieces did mean Juan Carlos had his work cut out.

On ten minutes, in the last of three practically consecutive corners, the ball travelled across the Numancia area with nobody to clear it or attempt a shot, and fell to Jairo, whose semi-volley took a couple of rebounds and ended in the net to put Cádiz ahead. Having the lead, Álvaro Cervera’s men then settled down and let Numancia take the initiative. The visitors were not comfortable on the pitch, though, and barely got close to Cifuentes’ goal, certainly not dangerously.

Everything changed in the second half, however. The Rojillos stepped up a gear and while Cádiz sat back and waited for the chance to steal a second on the break, Cifuentes was now called into action and had to make three saves in quick succession.

David Rodríguez, running onto a ball filtered through to him by Nacho, found himself in a one-on-one with Cifuentes and slid the ball neatly past the onrushing keeper to put the scores level. Numancia were having their best spell of the game now, but unfortunately lost Diamanka to injury.

As the minutes ticked by and the end approached, Cádiz kept on pressing in the hope of finding the winner. Numancia were by now in full defensive mode and doing a good job in repelling the waves of attacks. Stoppage time came, however, as did the curse that so often appears in those final minutes. Machís it was who blew Numancia’s good work out of the water. First, he provoked a second yellow card, and consequently the sending-off, of Unai Medina, just before the 90-minute mark. Then, in the 95th, he jinked across the edge of the box and found the gap necessary to fire in a shot that slipped past Juan Carlos into the bottom corner. There was no time for more, the Rojillos once again were left to rue a workmanlike performance all go to nothing in the dying seconds of the game.
