Almería storm Los Pajaritos (0-2)

Numancia defeated by Andalusians in sixth game of the campaign

CD Numancia lost for the first time at Los Pajaritos in this 2018-19 campaign. They were beaten by U D Almería, a team that had never won here, and who gave a lesson in sobriety, intensity and competitive spirit, outplaying the Rojillos in all facets of the game.

Numancia were not comfortable at any moment during the game, having their hands well tied by the visitors, losing many of the 50/50 disputes, and having difficulties winning the second balls. Almeria were rarely in trouble, although the first dangerous moment of the game was for Numancia when Nacho attacked from the right wing and sent in an angled shot that went very close to René's post.
In attack, Almería reached the edge of the hosts’ box without too much difficulty. Juan Carlos intervened decisively on a couple of occasions to keep the score level, while the home side could have broken the deadlock through Guillermo, who was unable to resolve a one-on-one with René. Just in the last minute of the first half, Almeria went ahead. A free-kick from the wing, sent in by Juan Carlos, the ball flew past the Numancia defenders at the near post and surprised everyone by finding its way the net.
This was a severe blow for the Sorianos coming, as it did, just before the players went in for the break, and forced them to think about how to improve in the second half. After the break, López Garai sent two strikers into the fray. Higinio replaced Kako and went on to play alongside Guillermo. A few minutes later, Borja Viguera came on as well, replacing Luis Valcarce. The home team threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, while Almeria seemed to content to maintain the result. Jordi Sanchez came on for an exhausted Guillermo and Numancia, more with their heart than their head, kept trying, ultimately unsuccessfully, to level the scores.

Four minutes from the end, Almería clinched the result. Chema, who had just come on, latched on to a loose ball in the Numancia box, after a good stop by Juan Carlos, and slotted into the net.

There was no time for more. It was not to be Numancia’s day, and they ended up giving all three points to an Almeria side who had been superior throughout the 90 minutes.
