A deserved win for Numancia

Borja Viguera’s 85th-minute penalty tips the balance in the Rojillos’ favour

CD Numancia overcame Real Zaragoza by a 1-0 scoreline after a vibrant game at Los Pajaritos. The match was decided in the 85th minute thanks to Borja Viguera, who slotted home from the spot after the referee had awarded the hosts a penalty for a handball in the Zaragoza area. The goal earned the Rojillos a just victory, given that they had dominated throughout, had most of the possession and created the most chances.

López Garai and his coaching staff read the script of the game perfectly and set the team up well to face a Zaragoza side who had not won any of their last four games but who have with many quality players in their squad.

From the outset, Numancia knew what they had to do and played the best first 45 minutes of the season so far, pushing Zaragoza back and leaving them with no option but to play on the counterattack.

Despite the setback of losing Unai Medina to injury on the quarter hour, Numancia continued to dominate and Nacho, the substitute, fitted in well as a replacement, giving the team depth down the right side.

The domination meant the hosts found their way into the Zaragoza box many times. In the first half alone, the Rojillos earned half a dozen corners and had several good goalscoring chances, two of them, shots from Higinio and Dani Calvo, really clear.

After the break, the game looked like it was evening up, but Álvaro’s injury deprived the visitors of one of their key players. Diamanka then went close for the hosts, but was denied by Cristian, who made a good save and put the ball out for yet another corner.

While Numancia continued to dominate, the visitors defended in an orderly fashion. Fran Villalba’s long-range effort went wide and as the second half progressed, the game became somewhat bogged down as the home side tried every which way to find a way through while Zaragoza resisted, hoping to get a chance on the break, with Aguirre and Soro giving them fresh legs.

Late on, in a good piece of play in the visitors’ area, Marc Mateu tried to tee up Diamanka, but his pass hit Grippo on the arm and the referee adjudged the action to be worthy of a penalty. Viguera converted the spot-kick and that was enough to give the Rojillos a deserved victory, one they had fought for tenaciously throughout the ninety minutes.
